An ANA All Nippon Airways Boeing 737-800, registration JA86AN performing flight NH-1502 from Okinawa to Saga (Japan) with 158 people on board, was climbing out of Okinawa when the crew stopped the climb at FL220 due to right hand engine (CFM56) vibrations followed by high engine oil temperatures. The crew shut the engine down and returned to Okinawa for a safe landing on runway 36R about one hour after departure and was evacuated via slides. Three passengers received minor injuries (scrapes) as result of the evacuation.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Okinawa about 8 hours after landing.
The JTSB rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.
The JTSB added on Oct 16th 2026: "The aircraft took off from Naha Airport at 9:08 PM on September 23rd. During the flight, a malfunction occurred in the right (No. 2) engine, so the engine was shut down, an emergency was declared, and the aircraft returned to Naha Airport. It landed on Runway A at 10:05 PM. The aircraft then came to a stop on a taxiway near the runway, and the passengers were evacuated using the emergency escape slides."
