A Croatia Airlines Bombardier C-Series CS-300, registration 9A-CAN performing flight OU-412 from Split (Croatia) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 132 passengers and 5 crew, was accelerating for takeoff from Split's runway 23 when the crew rejected takeoff at high speed (about 123 knots over ground) while veering towards the left edge of the runway. While slowing down the aircraft went beyond the left runway edge, continued parallel to the edge and came to a stop about 1800 meters/6000 feet down the runway and just left of the left runway edge. There were no injuries, the damage to the aircraft is being assessed.
The airline reported the crew rejected takeoff in line with safety procedures. The passengers disembarked and are in the terminal at Split, there were no injuries. The passengers are being provided with assistance to continue their journeys.
Croatia's Agency for Investigations (AIN) released their preliminary report in Croatian only reporting the crew had monitored the wind situation, winds from 290 degrees at 15 knots gusting 21 knots within permissable limits, while taxiing for departure from runway 05 and based on the winds requested runway 23, which was approved. The AIN commented: "Therefore, the influence of the wind was not negligible, but it was below the permitted limit." Visibility and runway condition were no factor. After lining up the runway acceleration was normal until reaching just below V1, when the aircraft began to drift to the left gradually at first, then suddenly and went off the edge of the runway. The crew managed to align the aircraft parallel to the runway and rejected takeoff. After coming to a stop the left main gear was on soft ground, the right main gear on the runway surface and the nose gear in a shallow drain alongside the runway edge. The left engine and nose gear received minor damage, the left nose tyre burst. As result of reverse thrust dirt was thrown up onto the runway, which damaged the plating and some elements of the lower part of the fuselage and left wing. Some damage also occurred to the left engine due to hitting signal markings alongside the track.
