A Qantas Boeing 737-800, registration VH-VZQ performing flight QF-122 from Queenstown (New Zealand) to Sydney,NS (Australia), was climbing out of Queenstown's runway 23 when the left hand engine (CFM56) emitted bangs and streaks of flames. The crew stopped the climb at FL150 and diverted to Christchurch (New Zealand) where the aircraft landed on runway 02 without further incident about 50 minutes later.
The remainder of the flight was cancelled.
The airline reported an engine issue.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Christchurch about 8.5 hours after landing.
