A China Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration B-18665 performing flight CI-840 from Bangkok (Thailand) to Kaohsiung (Taiwan) with 116 passengers and 8 crew, was taxiing for departure from Bangkok's runway 02R and was lining the runway up for departure when the main gear of the aircraft broke through the runway surface and became immobilized.
The runway needed to be closed until the aircraft was moved back onto safe surface about 5 hours later and the runway was repaired.
Thailand's Ministry of Transport reported preliminary investigation results suggest recent heavy rain falls had caused high ground water levels causing sub-surface erosion and subsequent structural failure of the runway under the weight of the aircraft. Temporary repairs have been completed, further assessment is needed for final repairs.
