An Iberia Airbus A321-200N, registration EC-OOJ performing flight IB-579 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Paris Orly (France) with 148 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Madrid's runway 36L when the crew stopped the climb at about 7000 feet following a bird strike. The aircraft returned to Madrid for a safe landing on runway 32L about 25 minutes after departure and stopped on the runway. The aircraft radome was damaged, the left hand engine received damaged fan blades, the aircraft was towed off the runway about 25 minutes after landing. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
On Aug 12th 2025 Spain's CIAIAC reported the aircraft was climbing through about 6400 feet when a large bird impacted the aircraft breaking much of the radome. Debris of the bird and the aircraft was ingested by the left hand engine (Leap). The engine was shut down, the aircraft began to fill with white smoke, the flight crew donned their oxygen masks. After landing disembarkation was done via the right hand doors. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. The CIAIAC is investigating the occurrence.
