A Skywest Embraer ERJ-175 on behalf of American Airlines, registration N510SY performing flight AA-6469 from Omaha,NE to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing out of Omaha's runway 32L when the crew stopped the climb at 5000 feet after the flight crew was unable to reach the cabin crew via intercom and somebody was knocking on the cockpit door, the flight crew suspected a passenger might try to break into the cockpit. The aircraft landed safely back on Omaha's runway 32L about 19 minutes after departure.
Skywest reported the aircraft returned out of abundance of caution after the flight crew experienced communication problems with the flight crew microphone.
American Airlines stated that the intercom, that pilots and cabin crew use to communicate with each other, had been left on by accident, so that cabin crew was unable to communicate with the cockpit.
The FAA reported, the flight attendants subsequently knocked onto the cockpit door. The flight crew, fearing a breach into the cockpit, returned to Omaha advising ATC people were trying to get into the cockpit and requesting police to meet the aircraft. Flight dispatch cancelled the emergency telling authorities that there was no emergency but a staffing issue.
The aircraft departed again and reached Los Angeles with a delay of about 4:20 hours.
