A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N8657B performing flight WN-975 from Phoenix,AZ to Saint Louis,MO (USA), was climbing out of Phoenix's runway 07L when the crew stopped the climb at 15000 feet due to a surge of the left hand engine (CFM56) and decided to return to Phoenix for a safe landing on runway 08 about 30 minutes after departure.
The FAA reported: "Southwest Airlines Flight 975 returned safely to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport around 3 p.m. local time on Monday, April 6, after the crew reported a left engine surge. The Boeing 737 MAX-8 was heading to St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The FAA will investigate. "
