A United Boeing 757-200, registration N33132 performing flight UA-1321 from Newark,NJ to Los Angeles,CA (USA), was climbing through about 1500 feet out of Newark's runway 04L when the transponder ceased to transmit. The crew reported electrical problems, partial electrical failure, they lost their lateral navigation, it appeared they had an equipment cooling issue, and they requested vectors while working checklists, ATC began providing delay vectors. The aircraft levelled off at 8000 feet. Some time later ATC advised he had a Mode-C off their transponder again and queried whether the altitude indication was correct. The crew was subsequently able to restore the systems and to continue the flight, climbed to FL360 and landed safely in Los Angeles about 20 minutes ahead of scheduled arrival time.
The aircraft remained on the ground in Los Angeles for about 7 hours before departing to its next flight.
